USA Biolympiad (USABO)

Overview:

The USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) is the premier biology competition for high school students in the United States, organized by the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE). Its purpose is to identify, challenge, and recognize the most talented biology students in the nation and to select the U.S. team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO).

Format:

• The USABO consists of three main rounds:

• Open Exam

  • Format: 50 multiple-choice questions

  • Time: 50 minutes

  • Eligibility: Open to all U.S. high school students

  • Purpose: Selects top ~10% to advance

• Semifinal Exam

  • Format: Multiple-choice, short answer, and essays

  • Topics: Broad and in-depth biology content

  • Time: ~2 hours

  • Purpose: Selects top 20 students for national finals

• National Finals

  • Format: In-depth theoretical and practical exams (including lab work)

  • Location: In-person training camp

  • Outcome: Top 4 students represent the U.S. at the International Biology Olympiad (IBO)

International Biology Olympiad

Overview:

The International Biology Olympiad (IBO) is the world’s most prestigious biology competition for high school students. Held annually since 1990, the IBO brings together elite students from over 80 countries to showcase their knowledge, problem-solving ability, and practical skills in the biological sciences. Each country sends a team of up to four students, typically selected through a national olympiad program (e.g., USABO for the United States).

• The IBO spans several days and includes:

• Theoretical Exams

  • Advanced multiple-choice and short-answer questions

  • Tests breadth and depth of biological understanding

  • Emphasizes analysis, application, and integration of concepts

• Practical Exams (Lab Exams)

  • Hands-on experiments and data interpretation

  • Tests laboratory techniques, observation, and precision

  • Topics vary from microscopy and physiology to biochemistry and ecology

British Biology Olympiad

Overview:

The British Biology Olympiad (BBO) is a prestigious national competition organized by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) for pre-university students aged 16–18. It aims to challenge and inspire students with a strong interest in biology by exposing them to advanced biological concepts beyond the typical school curriculum.

Format:

• Duration: Two online exams, each lasting 45 minutes

• Questions: Multiple-choice format

• Structure: Tests a range of topics from across the biological sciences

• Administration: Usually taken in schools under supervision, typically in January each year
